The express elevator to the subconscious.

"The Awakening"

Tapping into the subconscious is for most people a learned technique. And the fastest way to learn it is through mediation. Throughout parts of my life I’ve studied and practiced Zen (Zazen) meditation and a variant of Tibetan meditation. The fundamental idea is to empty the mind and through this practice achieve Nirvana, the true Dharma eye, the wonderful mind of Nirvana, the true form of the formless, and the Dharma gate that doesn’t rest on words or letters but is a special transmission from outside of the dogma and scriptures and conventions of the world. I have achieved satori only twice in my life. Once through traditional seated meditation and once through walking mediation. However, it doesn’t make me special, it doesn’t qualify me to be anything, not a sage nor a teacher. I consider myself a Paccekabuddha a “silent Buddha” because I am unable to teach what I have discovered. For some it is a very difficult path. Try this: sit somewhere quiet, close your eyes and don’t concentrate on anything in particular – let your mind wander where it wants to go, and after a few minutes chant silently in your mind this Tibetan mantra, “Om Mani Padme Hum”, (ohm) (mah) (nee) (pahd) (may) (hum), over and over again. Try this for five minutes and see what the result is. I think you’ll find that five minutes is a long time.

Subconscious – “Untitled No. 2″

I

I have now acquired the ability not to interfere, screen, edit, think, nor interrupt the stream and flow of my subconscious when drawing these new pieces in comparison with most of my other work where I spend many hours roaming around in my brain for ideas and then consciously working on content, composition, style, theme and revising revisions of revisions of revisions until I feel satisfied that the piece is complete and expresses the original idea. But in reality all of my work is never finished – I could take an older picture and deconstruct it and put it back together in an infinite number of ways. My new drawings with black backgrounds and sometimes white are an enigma shrouded in mysticism and hidden in archetypal code. I have no satanic powers or godly gifts. I am just a man with a diseased brain. And as an artist will not hesitate to illustrate the known and unknown history of my experience. I never thought, but I have been told I am a mystic. “Untitled No. 2″ copyright 2009 John Poole

“Baphomet”

August 25th, 2009 John 3 comments

BaphometHere is one of my latest drawings. It is an imagined pagan deity of Christian folklore that has become in the 19th century a figure of Satanism. The original image was drawn by Eliphas Lévi. Demonology seems a common theme with people who have bipolar disorder. Major depression along with psychotic symptoms brings with it all matter of fiendish demons and visions of hell which I have experienced. This is a rather tame icon of what in modern times would be called Satan. – John ”Baphomet” copyright 2009 John Poole
